Top Causes of Home Fires

It seems that this is the time of year when the number of house fires escalates. A fire in the home is devastating, often destroying the structure, ruining precious belongings and even causing injury or death to loved ones. To prevent one in your house, consider these top causes of house fires.
inside of a burnt room from a fire
  • Cooking fires. Never leave something cooking unattended, and always have an extinguisher handy that is made especially for the kitchen that is able to put out any kind of fire. Remember, throwing water on a grease fire will only intensify it.
  • Heating equipment. Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned every year before you use it. The same goes for your furnace, and if you use space heaters, make sure they are not near anything flammable, including paper, clothing, furniture and drapes.
  • Curious children. Some children are just drawn to matches and lighters, so be vigilant about keeping them out of reach.
  • Smoking. Falling asleep while smoking is an extremely dangerous thing, and a single fallen ember can smolder for a long time before bursting into a flame.
  • Candles. These decorating items are more popular than ever, but often not recognized for their potential danger. Never leave a candle burning unattended, and make sure there is nothing near it that could ignite. Always blow them out before going to bed or leaving the room.
  • Electrical issues. One of the most common problems is overloading an extension cord, but be on the lookout for frayed cords too. If you have issues like circuits tripping or fuses blowing frequently, it may be a sign that it's time for an electrical inspection and upgrade.
  • Flammable products. Be careful where you store cans of paint, stain, sealer, cleaning products and other household items. Try to keep them in a cool, ventilated area and never near a heating source.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are upwards of 350,000 house fires in the United States each year. Being aware of the most common causes can help you protect your home and family. To make sure you are covered in the event of a fire, contact your independent insurance agent.
