How to Manage the Flu This Year

The 2018 flu season has been one of the worst in recent memory. Widespread cases of flu have hit 46 states and there has been a significant increase in the deaths. It’s not over yet, so heed these warnings to look after yourself. doctor holding red stethoscope

Influenza is an extremely contagious and risky virus. Even with today’s modern medicine, there’s only so much doctors can do to treat and control its effects. Often, once patients get the flu, they are stuck with it for several days, and it’s simply a matter of waiting to get well. Needless to say, it’s always better to try to prevent the flu at all costs. Here are some of the ways you can do that:

1. Receive the Annual Flu Vaccine

Even this late in the season, there’s still time to get a flu shot. While it might not prevent all cases of the flu, it is one of the best deterrents available on the market. Furthermore, receiving the annual flu shot might help reduce the symptoms of flu if you do catch it. Your health insurance likely covers a flu shot at little or no cost to you.

2. Avoid High-Risk Areas

Prevent the spread of germs. If you know someone has the flu, it is best not to visit that person. Furthermore, many hospitals and medical centers have enacted visitor restrictions. This helps contain the spread of flu within their premises.

It is best not to visit areas where there’s a high risk of germ transmission until the flu season has subsided. Such areas might include theaters, airports or other large gathering places.

Of course, do not let the threat of flu stop you from socializing. However, do your best to minimize contact with strangers. For example, carry a personal-sized alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Use it periodically. Cover your mouth when you sneeze. Even small steps can prevent the spread of germs.

3. Pay Attention to Hygiene and Self-Care

Hygiene and self-care often means you create a stronger barrier against germs. Bathe regularly and eat properly to ensure that your immune system remains strong. Furthermore, take all of your prescription medications to keep yourself in shape. Exercise in appropriate manners. Don’t forget that washing your hands with soap and hot water is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs.

Some of the symptoms that indicate the flu include:

  • Fever, chills and aches
  • Sore throat, cough and congestion
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal problems

And more.

If you develop any of these symptoms, immediately seek medical attention. The earlier your doctors catch the flu, the better they usually can treat you. Your health insurance plan will likely cover some or all of the costs of getting treatment for the flu.
