Flat-Earther Daredevil Killed in California Desert Rocket Crash

Flat-Earther Daredevil Killed in California Desert Rocket CrashA daredevil and “flat-earther” was killed Saturday while trying to launch himself 5,000 feet into the air on a steam-powered, homemade rocket in the California desert. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a man had died in Barstow after a “rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event” but but did not identify the victim. But the Science Channel, which was filming the launch for its new series Homemade Astronauts confirmed that well-known amateur rocket-maker “Mad” Mike Hughes had been killed.“Our thoughts & prayers go out to his family & friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch & Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey,” the channel said in a tweet.Video of the launch posted online showed the flight going awry from the start, with parachutes meant to carry Hughes safely back to the ground ripping away right after blast-off.Logan Paul Sued Over Flat Earth Mockumentary by Guy Trying to Launch Himself Into Space on Homemade RocketThe limo driver had been vowing since 2017 to ride his rocket into the air, in part to get high enough to confirm his totally incorrect belief that the Earth is flat.He had two failed launch dates but in March 2018 managed to get 1,800 feet in the air above the Mojave Desert before parachuting back down in the nose cone, making a hard landing, according to Space.com.“I'm tired of people saying I chickened out and didn't build a rocket. I'm tired of that stuff. I manned up and did it,” he said at the time.In August 2019, he tried again—hoping to reach 5,000 feet, but the boiler he bought on Craigslist reportedly conked out and the mission was aborted. As The Daily Beast reported last year, Hughes sued YouTube megastar Logan Paul for including him in a mockumentary about the flat-earth movement, claiming he was filmed at a conference under false pretenses.Inside the Flat Earth Conference, Where the World’s Oldest Conspiracy Theory Is Hot Again“He came in using fraud and deception,” Hughes told The Daily Beast. “I’m not one to screw with when I get pissed off. I know how to shut you down.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Sign up now!Daily Beast Membership: Beast Inside goes deeper on the stories that matter to you. Malaysia in turmoil as Anwar denounces bid to bring down govt

Malaysia in turmoil as Anwar denounces bid to bring down govtMalaysian politics was in turmoil Monday after leader-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim denounced a "betrayal" by coalition partners he said were trying to bring down the government, two years after it stormed to victory. Anwar's "Pact of Hope" alliance was thrown into crisis after his rivals within the coalition and opposition politicians met at the weekend reportedly to try to form a new government. Speculation is mounting that Anwar, who had been the presumptive successor to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, and his lawmakers would be left out of any new coalition, ending his hopes of becoming premier any time soon.

‘It’s Unfair to Say Everything Was Bad’: Sanders Defends Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro

‘It’s Unfair to Say Everything Was Bad’: Sanders Defends Cuban Dictator Fidel CastroSenator Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) praised Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes aired on Sunday."We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know?" Sanders said. "When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?"When host Anderson Cooper pointed out that Cuba imprisons political dissidents, Sanders responded "That's right. And we condemn that.""Unlike Donald Trump, let's be clear, you want to -- I do not think that Kim Jong-un is a good friend," the senator went on. "I don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine."Sanders's comments received bipartisan criticism from Florida lawmakers."I'm hoping that in the future, Senator Sanders will take time to speak to some of my constituents before he decides to sing the praises of a murderous tyrant like Fidel Castro," commented Representative Donna Shalala (D., Fla.), whose district encompasses a seaside area of Miami.Sanders is "wrong about why people didn't overthrow Castro," said Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.). "It's not because 'he educated their kids, gave them health care' it's because his opponents were jailed, murdered or exiled."Sanders has in the past declined to name Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro as an authoritarian leader, and has a long history of favorable statements about Nicaraguan strongman Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas.
